What do we know about House of the Dragon so far?

The series is not even out yet, but the Internet is already bursting with all kinds of theories and speculations. But here’s what we know so far.

The prequel series to Game of Thrones will take place 200 years before the events of the original. It will follow the House of the Targaryen at the height of its power and during a period of unrest over who should rule the Iron Throne. Because what else can it be about?

According to G.R.R. Martin and the show’s creators, the 10-episode series will follow the House of the Targaryen through a period of turbulent unrest leading up to a massive civil war known as the Dance of the Dragons. The war that will tear Westeros apart and make Game of Thrones happen.

Hyped yet? We know we sure are! But there are more things to get excited about!

The cast

You can’t talk about anything that has any connection to Game of Thrones without touching on the cast. After all, the original series made everyone who starred in it an immediate celebrity. So there’s no doubt House of the Dragon will do the same.

And House of the Dragon is starting off with a star-studded cast from the get-go.

First of, we have Matt Smith, Doctor Who himself, as Daemon Targaryen, the prince and younger brother of King Viserys played by Paddy Considine.

The richly-talented Emma D’Arcy will be playing Rhaenyra Targaryen. And Olivia Cooke will be starring as Alicent Hightower. Just to name a few.

Even these names would be enough to get any fan of the original at least mildly stimulated. But this is the Game of Thrones we’re talking about. So even if we try to go through every single cast member we’d be here until the show comes out!

When is it coming out?

There we go, the truly interesting part.

After over 3 years since the last episode of Game of Thrones and a very long production period postponed by the COVID-19 pandemic, House of the Dragon will finally be released on the small screen on August 22nd.

So it’s pretty close. About time to polish off that Iron Throne replica and take a month off work so there’s nothing keeping you from bingeing the season the second a new episode drops!

Where can you stream House of the Dragon?

In its heyday, Game of Thrones made HBO a household name. Everyone everywhere wanted to get their hands on a way to stream it.

House of the Dragon aims to do the same for HBO Max – HBO’s own streaming platform which has since been launched and slowly rolled out outside of the US.

House of the Dragon is an HBO exclusive and as such it will be released exclusively on the HBO Max streaming platform in every country that has it.

But what about the ones that don’t? Well, this is where things get needlessly convoluted and complicated.

While HBO Max has been slowly rolling out worldwide, that’s still a drop in a bucket compared to all of the places that still don’t have it and want to watch the newest show. In most countries where HBO Max is not yet present, HBO licenses the streaming rights to the show to many of its foreign partners such as Sky in Germany, Italy, and the UK, or local streaming providers such as OCS in France. But others might even have to wait longer for the show to reach them.
